Apple Valley teacher accused of lewd acts to be arraigned

An Apple Valley middle school instructor suspected of lewd conduct with a former female student is scheduled to appear for arraigment Tuesday in Superior Court.

Brenton James Unferth, 38, who taught physical education at Sitting Bull Middle School, is scheduled to appear for arraignment at 8 a.m. in Victorville Superior Court, according to the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office.

The victim's parents called Sheriff's deputies in November about inappropriate contact between Unferth and the girl after reviewing text messages on her phone, according to the Sheriff's Department. After an investigation, Unferth was arrested and booked into Victor Valley Jail.

Unferth was charged with one felony count of having lewd or lascivious acts with a child, according to Superior Court records.

The Apple Valley School District placed Unferth on administrative leave, according to the Sheriff's Department. He is currently out of custody on bail, court records indicate.
