A preliminary hearing was postponed Wednesday for a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy facing four felony counts for allegedly assaulting and threatening a tow-truck driver in an altercation on the 10 Freeway east of Indio.

Richard Heverly, 42, of La Verne, was placed on paid administrative leave from his position at West Valley Detention Center the day of his Aug. 18 arrest.

Heverly appeared out of custody at Indio Superior Court for a brief hearing Wednesday morning.

A preliminary hearing -- where testimony is typically heard and a defendant is then "held to answer" on criminal charges -- scheduled for next month was postponed to January 9, according to online court documents.
