ONTARIO - City Council candidate Debra Porada said she is consulting an attorney after the San Bernardino County registrar of voters left her candidate statement out of some 8,000 sample ballots.

The registrar has accepted the blame for omitting Porada's candidate statement and has agreed to reprint the sample ballot.

At the request of Porada, a correction notice was mailed out Tuesday, said Registrar Kari Verjil.

Inside there is a packet with the omitted candidate statement and copies of the other candidate statements, Verjil said.

The inclusion of the other statements is what Porada said upsets her.

"I'm not pleased because the other candidates will have their statements in twice and I'm in once," she said Tuesday morning.

Porada said she has asked the registrar to remove the other statements from the mailer or specify in the letter whose statement was left out.

"I feel if they don't acknowledge whose statement was left out, then it doesn't level the playing field," Porada said.

Porada, a member of the Ontario-Montclair School District board, found out last week that her candidate statement had been left out. She said she does not feel the registrar has fixed the problem.

Despite Porada's recent requests, Verjil said her office would not do anything differently.

Verjil said she had consulted legal counsel as well as the city about the actions she was going to take.

"As the registrar, we can't promote one candidate over the other, which is why the other candidate statements are included," Verjil said.

Verjil said her office is unable to change the letter because it was printed late Monday night.

"We feel this is the best method to handle this situation," Verjil said. "We do apologize to the candidate."

Porada said she disagrees with Verjil and sent the information to an attorney to see what, "if anything, I can do."

Porada said the effects of the error will become evident on Election Day.

"When the election rolls around, I'll look at those precincts and see if that had some type of effect," Porada said.
