Dear Friend, Get out the vote — don’t let the prison guards win! Last week the prison guards finally weighed in on Proposition 5 and gave $1 million to the “no” side. Surprised? Neither am I. This is the state’s largest special interest getting in the way of solving the state’s biggest problem again. You know they can’t help it. They fear change — and smaller paychecks. We need your help to fight back and win on November 4! Don’t let the voices of 30,000 prison guards and parole officers be heard over yours, mine and the millions of other Californians who want real solutions to our drug problems and prison overcrowding crisis! Tell your friends and family to “Vote Yes on 5!” on November 4. Then help us call out the prison guards for being more concerned with protecting their paychecks than public safety. Join me in showing our representatives that we support treatment-instead-of-incarceration — and this year that means voting 'yes' on Prop. 5. Let Governor Schwarzenegger and Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer know that we support Prop. 5 — the largest prison and sentencing reform in U.S. history — because it will expand treatment access and stop the excessive incarceration of nonviolent drug offenders. Take action now. Prop. 5 will change the way the state intervenes in the lives of nonviolent people with drug problems, creating a support system for young people and implementing sentencing and prison reforms repeatedly recommended by experts for decades. Prop. 5 will finally address the role that drugs play in our record high incarceration rates. I’m going to remind my representatives that, especially in a time of budget crisis, California cannot afford the status quo — and that the prison guards are only protecting themselves. Will you tell your representatives, too? The state cannot continue to turn its back on young people or to “churn” nonviolent offenders with drug problems through our prisons and jails. Prop. 5 would reallocate existing resources to make quality programs available for young people and nonviolent offenders. According to the nonpartisan legislative analyst, Prop. 5 will save taxpayers $2.5 billion over the next few years. Send your personal support letter, letting your representatives know that you support Prop. 5 — a historic shift toward drug treatment and rehabilitation — and so should they on November 4.
