World for Ending US Blockade of Cuba

Havana, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Over 7,000 writers and artists worldwide have slammed the policy of harassment by the US government against Cuba, whose economy has been damaged after the passing of two powerful hurricanes.

Solidarity messages from prominent artists, politicians and academics, among others, visit every day the website www.concubahoy.cult.cu, in which Cuban scholars and creators called for the world against the US economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba.

"You are not alone, let's demand the immediate end of the criminal and cruel harassment, stop aggressions against the Cuban people, Yankees, lift the blockade," are some of the most frequent expression appeared in messages from 30 countries.

The Cuban call also request solidarity support to hurricane-devastated nation.

Faced with this tragic circumstance, stresses the text, a debate on restrictions imposed to Cuban residents in that country to visit and support their relatives in the island is being taken place in United States.

The document highlights the Cuban request that, at least, the island can purchase in United States materials for repairing houses and electrical lines, and that country can offer trade credits to the Caribbean nation to purchase foods.

As a response, the administration by President George W. Bush has offered ridiculous support and ratified its policy of economic and financial blockade, which in the situation of this country is still more severe.

"Let's appeal to sensibility of thinkers and artists throughout the world to demand the immediate lifting of the criminal US blockade and foster actions of solidarity and support to Cuba," concludes the call.
